This town’s only big enough for one sorcerer…
Jane Fortune is a talented young businesswoman, having turned her hobby of making candles and bath bombs into a decently lucrative career. The north Georgia mountains attract tourists, after all, and who doesn’t like to smell nice?
But Ragged Gap’s witchier townsfolk know about some of Jane’s other talents. Rumor has it that she can make problems disappear, especially if someone is being abused. Jane doesn’t advertise her gifts, nor does she take payment for her “special” jobs, but she’s highly effective. Unbeknownst to her neighbors, Jane is a sorcerer, the real deal.
It’s a pity that her existence is evidence of a crime, at least by Pactlands standards.
Jane’s never been into the pocket world her long-missing mother called home, as her father was merely human—and the adopted father who raised her, a sorcerer in his own right, didn’t turn her mother in when he had the chance. While Jane’s curious about the Pactlands, she doesn’t want to put her dad in danger by exposing herself.
But then she finds a dead faun in her yard, and a stranger with talent of her own begins promising Jane’s neighbors magical power beyond their wildest dreams.
Ragged Gap is Jane’s town, and she’ll defend it…even if that means revealing her existence to the people who could cost her everything she holds dear.
Some offers you can’t refuse.
The last couple of months have been a mixed bag for Jane Fortune. Sure, she saved Ragged Gap from the clutches of a rogue sorcerer, but now most of the victims hate her. She got to speak with her cousin in the Pactlands, though a face-to-face meeting is impossible. But Jane’s dad is still a free man, so she counts that as a win.
Then Warner Cavanaugh comes calling. A self-proclaimed warlock from Whitford, the next town over, Warner tells Jane about the demonic familiar his “patrons” gave him—a gift no longer worth the upkeep. He offers to sell her his familiar, perhaps as an assistant in her bath products business.
Warner’s familiar is no demon, however, and her existence in Georgia, like Jane’s, points to a crime. As Jane tries to figure out where the girl came from and where she needs to be, she’s forced to turn once again to the
Pactlands agents who could jeopardize her life and her father’s freedom.
And then there’s the matter of the Whitford police chief, who’s been doing his own research into Ragged Gap’s resident sorcerer and part-time arsonist.
Jane knows she’s dancing closer to the fire, but how far will she go to solve the mystery?
Even for sorcerers, the truth will out.
Finally, Jane Fortune’s luck is turning. Considering all the good she’s done for the Pactlands, the Division of Laws is willing to overlook the tiny matter of her adopted father’s crime and work to get Jane’s citizenship sorted. As she’s half human, she’ll need to win the approval of the three sorcerers on the Forum—but since one is already in her debt, surely this will be a cinch.
Or not.
When her Forum visit goes horribly wrong, Jane finds herself on the run with her boyfriend, Connor Willow, trying to avoid the sorcerer who wants to wipe her memory and force on her the notorious death draught. With her life upended and her father incarcerated in the Pactlands, Jane decides to find her long-absent mother once and for all, hoping for answers or possibly a trade for her father’s freedom.
But Ragged Gap’s resident sorcerer is about to discover far more than she’d ever anticipated, and the secrets she learns could have deadly consequences…
